Make sure you're not looking at Line 11 of your W-2 or 1099 form. You need your actual 2024 federal 1040 return or a transcript instead.
Here's how you can locate your 2024 federal tax return:
If you filed with us last year:
If you're using the same FreeTaxUSA account this year, we'll automatically include the Prior Year AGI amount for you on the Prior Year AGI screen. You can also find your 2024 tax return here: Menu Path: Account > Prior Returns
If your 2024 return is not listed there, you may have filed with a different account username. Use the Forgot Username tool to see a list of possible usernames linked to your email address.
If you filed with another software last year:
Look at your tax return from last year to find your prior year AGI. You'll see your AGI on Line 11 of Form 1040, Form 1040-SR, or 1040NR (whichever form you filed).
If you don't have access to your return from last year:
You can request a transcript of your prior year return (which will include your prior year AGI).
Other circumstances:
If one of these things happened to you, you may need to enter something different than what was on your return last year:
- I didn't file a return last year or this is my first time filing
- I was a dependent on last year's return
- I filed last year's return after November 10th
- The IRS hasn't finished processing last year's return
- I amended my return last year
- My filing status changed
- My return was rejected for an incorrect Prior Year AGI or PIN
- I had an ITIN when I filed last year's return but I have an SSN for this year's return
What if I only have a 2024 W-2 instead of my 2024 1040 tax return?
