Vermont tax details

Vermont made a few changes for the 2025 tax year:

  • Increased the standard deduction amounts.
  • Increased the age limit for the Vermont Child Tax Credit from 5 to 6.
  • Added a new refundable credit for veterans who's AGI is less than $30,000.
  • Allows subtracting some or all of military retirement pay from income if AGI is less than $175,000.
  • Removed the Vermont Entrepreneurs' Seed Capital Fund Credit.
  • Clarified that estimated payments must include child care tax estimates for self employment income.

2025 Vermont extension

An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. If you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026. If you pay late, you may be charged a late penalty.

If you expect a refund from Vermont:

Automatic with an accepted federal extension.

If you expect to owe Vermont taxes:

File Vermont Form IN-151 with payment by April 15, 2026.

If your federal extension is not accepted, a Vermont extension can be requested with Vermont Form IN-151 by April 15, 2026.
