2025 Oregon extension

If you can't file your Oregon return by the due date, you may be able to get a six-month extension of time to file.

An extension of time to file doesn't mean you have more time to pay your taxes. You must pay any tax you owe by April 15, 2026. If you don't, you'll owe interest on the unpaid balance from April 15, 2026, until the date it's paid, and will be subject to a minimum penalty of 5% of the unpaid tax. To avoid penalty and interest charges, include enough payment with your extension to cover your tax liability.

If you expect a refund from Oregon:

Oregon accepts your federal extension. Whether you filed a federal extension or not, check the "Extension Filed" box on your Form OR-40, OR-40-P, or OR-40-N when you send your tax return.

If you expect to owe Oregon taxes:

Oregon accepts your federal extension. If you didn't file for a federal extension, but you need more time to file your Oregon return and you owe tax, submit a payment by check or money order using Form OR-40-V with the "original return" box checked. You don't need to submit Form OR-40-V if you aren't paying by check or money order.

Even though the deadline has passed, you can still prepare Oregon taxes for prior years. Many people who file late tax returns have refunds waiting for them. We'll help you prepare and mail your federal and state tax returns.
