New Mexico tax details

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department made a few changes for the 2025 tax year:

  • Medical expenses that are not deductible on the federal return are not separately deductible on the New Mexico return anymore.
  • The medical care expense deduction for taxpayers age 65 or older has an expanded definition of what qualifies.
  • The deduction for school supplies purchased by a public school teachers has increased to $1,000 per qualified individual.
  • Surviving spouses of armed forces retirees can claim an exemption on military retirement pay as well.

Additionally, this year, there are two new credits:

  • The Advanced Energy Equipment Tax Credit
  • The Geothermal Electricity Generation Tax Credit

Pay by mail

If you are mailing your tax return, include Form PIT-PV and your check or money order with your return.
If you e-file your tax return, mail in a check or money order with Form PIT-PV.
If you filed an extension, mail in your extension tax payment with Form PIT-EXT.

All payments are due by April 15, 2026, whether or not an extension was filed.

2025 New Mexico extension

An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. If you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026.

If you expect a refund from New Mexico
Automatic with an accepted federal extension.

If you expect to owe New Mexico taxes
Submit Form PIT-EXT with your payment by April 15, 2026.

If you expect to file your federal return by the original due date, or your federal extension is not accepted, request a New Mexico extension by submitting Form RPD-41096. Make sure to submit form RPD-41096 on or before April 15, 2026.
