An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. If you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026.
You need to pay at least 80% of your tax liability by April 15, 2026. If you pay late, you may be charged a late penalty and interest on any unpaid taxes.
If you expect a refund from New Jersey:
Automatic with an accepted federal extension.
If you expect to owe New Jersey taxes:
Submit Form NJ-630 with payment by April 15, 2026.
If your federal extension is not accepted, a New Jersey extension can be requested with Form NJ-630.
