The Montana Department of Revenue made a few small changes for the 2025 tax year.
If itemizing deductions, Montana will now use the same amount as on your federal return, but any state income tax deduction claimed is now included as an addition to Montana income.
The subtraction for taxpayers aged 65 and older increased to $5,660. Additionally, the maximum subtraction for contributions to a 529 plan increased to $4,500 ($9,000 if Married Filing Jointly).
Montana has a new Mixed Residency filing status for taxpayers filing a joint return if the taxpayer and spouse had different Montana residency statuses during 2025.
Lastly, nonresident military spouses who aren't required to file a Montana tax return can now claim a filing exemption on their Montana return to easily claim a refund of any taxes withheld in error.
