Minnesota tax details

The Minnesota Department of Revenue made a few changes for the 2025 tax year.

You can now e-file amended Minnesota returns. You'll still need to mail amended Minnesota property tax returns.

New subtractions for Service Employees International Union (SEIU) stipend payments, foreign service retirement, and consumer enforcement public compensation were added.

The standard deduction amounts have increased for each filing status. Also, the dependent exemption amount increased to $5,200.

If you mailed your Minnesota tax return, you should wait 3 to 4 weeks before checking your MN refund status. Once processed, it may take 5 to 7 business days for your refund to appear in your bank account or on a prepaid debit card.

2025 Minnesota extension

An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. If you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by Invalid Date.

You need to pay 90% of your taxes by Invalid Date. If you pay late, you may be charged a late penalty and interest on any unpaid taxes.

If you expect a refund from Minnesota:
Minnesota extensions are automatic. No filing is required.

If you expect to owe Minnesota taxes:
Mail in your payment with MN-EXT by Invalid Date.
