Kansas tax details

The Kansas Department of Revenue made a few changes for tax year 2025:

  • A new exemption is available for parents of newborn and stillborn children delivered during 2025.
  • A subtraction is allowed for qualified contributions to an Adoption Savings Account.
  • An addition to income was added for unqualified withdrawals from Adoption Savings Accounts.
  • The Food Sales Tax Credit has been discontinued.

2025 Kansas extension

An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. If you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026.

You need to pay at least 90% of your tax liability by April 15, 2026. If you pay late, you may be charged a late penalty and interest on any unpaid taxes.

If you expect a refund from Kansas:

Automatic with an accepted federal extension. A copy of form 4868 (federal extension) must be enclosed with your Kansas income tax return when filed.

If you expect to owe Kansas taxes:

Submit a federal extension and a completed Form K-40 to automatically receive an extension. Due by April 15, 2026.
