The Illinois Department of Revenue made a few changes for the 2025 tax year.
The Illinois exemption amount was increased to $2,850 per person.
The Child Tax Credit, available to taxpayers who qualify to claim the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit and have a dependent child under the age of 12 years old, has been increased to 40% of the Illinois Earned Income Tax Credit.
Illinois also added a new subtraction to Schedule M for medical debt relief that was received under the Illinois Medical Debt Relief Act and is included in federal AGI.

An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. Illinois automatically grants a 6-month extension. No form is filed. If you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026.
You need to pay your taxes by April 15, 2026. If you pay late, you may be charged a late penalty and interest on any unpaid taxes.
