The Idaho Department of Revenue made a few changes for the 2025 tax year.
Idaho now has a flat tax rate of 5.3% for individual returns. For those filing as Married Filing Jointly, Head of Household, or as a Surviving Spouse, all taxable income above $9,622 will be taxed at the flat rate. For those filing as Single or Married Filing Separately, all taxable income above $4,811 will be taxed at the flat rate.
The Idaho Grocery Tax Credit has been renamed and is now called the Idaho Food Tax Credit. The standard version of the Food Tax Credit allows a credit of up to $155 per person claimed on your tax return. The new receipts-based version of this credit can be claimed instead of the standard version. This version allows a credit of up to $250 per person on your tax return, but you must provide receipts documenting the sales tax you paid on eligible food purchases in Idaho during 2025.
Idaho is providing a new Parental Choice Tax Credit for full-year residents with children in nonpublic schools, which helps cover qualifying expenses such as tuition and tutoring. The credit is for up to $5,000 per eligible student or up to $7,500 per eligible student with a qualifying disability. You must apply for this credit with the Idaho Tax Commission and be approved before you can claim it.

All payments are due by April 15, 2026, whether or not an extension was filed.
An extension extends the time you have to file your return to October 15, 2026. Idaho automatically grants an extension when you meet the payment requirement. There is no additional form to submit.
If you expect a refund from Idaho:
Automatic extension for Idaho.
If you expect to owe Idaho taxes:
You need to pay 80% of your 2025 estimated taxes or 100% of the total tax reported on your 2024 income tax return by April 15, 2026 in order to qualify for the extension.
Even though the deadline has passed, you can still prepare Idaho taxes for prior years. Many people who file late tax returns have refunds waiting for them. We'll help you prepare and mail your federal and state tax returns.
