District of Columbia tax details

The District of Columbia made several changes for tax year 2025.

Gross Income Filing Requirement

DC taxpayers may be required to file a DC tax return even if not required to file a federal tax return. You must file a 2025 DC tax return if your gross income is at or above the following amounts below, according to your filing status:

  • Married Filing Jointly: $30,000
  • Head of Household: $22,500
  • All other filing statuses and dependent filers: $15,000

DC Earned Income Tax Credit

The DC EITC has increased to 100% of the federal credit.

Federal Schedule 1-A additional deductions not allowed

DC does not allow the following new federal deductions on your DC tax return:

  • Tips deduction
  • Overtime deduction
  • Car loan interest deduction
  • Enhanced deduction for seniors

Additions to DC Income

DC doesn't allow many of the federal excluded income items and they must be added back. These include:

  • Out-of-State Municipal Bonds
  • Capital gains on qualified small business stocks
  • Capitalization amortization of domestic research and experimental expenditures
  • Calculation of limitation of business interest expenses

Subtractions from DC Income

Get your District of Columbia refund deposited in your bank account, mailed as a check, loaded on a prepaid debit card, or put towards next year's District of Columbia taxes.

Refund status for e-filed tax returns

If you filed your District of Columbia tax return electronically, you can usually check your DC refund status after the District of Columbia Office of Tax and Revenue accepts your return. Taxpayers usually receive their refunds within 6 weeks of the transmission of the return. If you filed with a DC earned income credit, you may receive part of your refund in installment payments over 11 months.

Refund status for mailed tax returns

If you mailed your District of Columbia tax return, you should wait several weeks before checking your DC refund status. Once processed, it may take up to 2 weeks for your refund to appear in your bank account or on a prepaid debit card.

2025 District of Columbia extension

An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. With an extension, you will have until October 15, 2026 to file your tax return. However, if you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026. If you pay late, you may be charged interest and a late payment penalty on any unpaid taxes.

If you expect a refund from District of Columbia:

Automatic with an accepted federal extension.

If you expect to owe District of Columbia taxes:

Submit DC Form FR-127 with your payment by April 15, 2026.

If you are living or traveling outside the US, you may receive another 6-month extension. You must file for the first 6-month extension by the April 15, 2026 deadline before applying for the additional extension of time to file.

If you do not owe DC taxes, did not file a federal extension, and need more time to file, you must submit Form FR-127 to receive a DC extension.
