An extension extends the time you have to file your return by up to 6 months. With an extension, you will have until October 15, 2026 to file your tax return. However, if you need to pay taxes, you are required to pay the amount due by April 15, 2026. If you pay late, you may be charged interest and a late payment penalty on any unpaid taxes.
If you expect a refund from District of Columbia:
Automatic with an accepted federal extension.
If you expect to owe District of Columbia taxes:
Submit DC Form FR-127 with your payment by April 15, 2026.
If you are living or traveling outside the US, you may receive another 6-month extension. You must file for the first 6-month extension by the April 15, 2026 deadline before applying for the additional extension of time to file.
If you do not owe DC taxes, did not file a federal extension, and need more time to file, you must submit Form FR-127 to receive a DC extension.
Even though the deadline has passed, you can still prepare District of Columbia taxes for prior years. Many people who file late tax returns have refunds waiting for them. We'll help you prepare and mail your federal and state tax returns.
