How do I count the months that my dependent lived with me?

If your dependent lived with you for an exact number of months, enter that amount. If your dependent didn't live with you for an exact number of months, round up to the next whole number of months.

A dependent is still considered as living with you during temporary absences.

If your dependent lived with you at least 183 days (184 in leap years), enter 7 or more months.

Example: You have split custody with your child's other parent and your child lives with you on the weekends. The child lived with you 104 days (2 days a week X 52 weeks), so you need to enter 4 months, since 104 days is about 3 1/2 months.

What if my dependent was born or died last year?

What if I adopted or fostered a child last year?
