What if I adopted or fostered a child in 2025?
To count the number of months lived with you, first you need to determine the amount of time the adopted or fostered child lived with you after they were adopted/placed with you. If your adopted or foster child lived with you for more than half of that time (after they were adopted/placed with you), then you can claim 7 or more months.
Example: You adopted a child in September, and the child lived with you from that point on. Because the child lived with you for more than half of the time after they were adopted, you can enter 7 or more months.
