What medical expenses can HSAs be used for?

HSA distributions can be used to pay for qualified medical expenses that weren't reimbursed by insurance or other coverage and that you incurred after the HSA was established. It also now includes nonprescription medicine and menstrual care products paid for after 2019.

If you withdrew excess contributions to your HSA or earnings from excess contributions, answer No to the question that asks if you used all of the HSA distributions for medical expenses. We'll need you to answer more questions about these on the next screen.

You can only treat insurance premiums as qualified medical expenses if the premiums are for:
  • Long-Term Care (LTC) insurance
  • Health care continuation coverage (ex. COBRA)
  • Health care coverage while receiving unemployment compensation under federal or state law
  • Medicare and other health care coverage if you were 65 or older (other than premiums for a Medicare supplemental policy, such as Medigap).
