How do emergency codes work?

We'll give you a list of randomly-generated emergency codes that you should print out and keep in a safe place.

After signing in with your username and password, you can use the emergency codes when you are unable to use another form of 2-Step Verification. Once an emergency code is used, it can't be used again. So, be sure to keep track of which codes you have used already.

Each time you sign in from a device we don't recognize, you'll need to enter a verification code sent to your email or phone. If you enable Emergency Code Verification, you'll have the option to enter one of your emergency codes instead of the other verification code.

Note: You can generate more emergency codes from your account if you run out of them. Once you generate a new list of codes, any unused codes from your old list can't be used anymore. We recommend emergency codes only be used as a backup sign in option to a different form of 2-Step Verification, such as Authenticator App Verification.
