What is the Illinois Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit?

The Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit is a nonrefundable credit of $500 that you can claim if you applied for and received a 2025 Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit certificate from the IDOR.

The Volunteer Emergency Worker Credit is limited and awarded on a first-come first-served basis.

To be awarded the credit, each individual must have met the following conditions:
  • Served as a volunteer emergency worker for at least 9 months during 2025.
  • Not received compensation of more than $5,000 during 2025 for their services as a volunteer emergency worker.
  • Listed by their fire chief to the Office of the State Fire Marshall or included on a list provided by their volunteer coordinator to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the Office of Homeland Security confirming that they meet the time and compensation conditions.
  • Submitted a complete online application for the credit to the IDOR.
  • Been one of the first 10,000 qualified applicants.
