North Carolina Tax Details

The North Carolina Department of Revenue made a few changes for the 2020 tax year.

The N.C. standard deduction amount increased for each filing status. North Carolina added two new forms for 2020-D-400 Schedule A for itemized deductions and D-400 Schedule PN-1 for part-year and nonresident other additions and deductions.

North Carolina did not follow all the provisions of the federal CARES act, so some items of income that are excluded for federal AGI may need to be included as additions to North Carolina income on Form D-400 Schedule S Part A. North Carolina allows taxpayers to deduct the $335 received under the Extra Credit Grant program on Form D-400 Schedule S Part B.

For itemized deductions, North Carolina conforms to federal law that allows taxpayers to deduct medical and dental expenses that exceed 7.5% of federal AGI. However, NC limits charitable contributions to 60% of federal AGI, not 100%.
