Massachusetts 2018 Tax Updates

The Massachusetts Department of Revenue has made changes to the Massachusetts Earned Income Credit starting in tax year 2017. Taxpayers who file as married filing separately are now eligible to claim the Earned Income Credit for Massachusetts purposes if the taxpayer is living apart from their spouse when they file their return and is unable to file a joint return because they are a victim of domestic violence.

Also, Massachusetts is now allowing a subtraction from income for purchases of or contributions to a pre-paid tuition or a college savings account established by the Commonwealth. The deduction is capped at $1,000 for a single person and $2,000 for a married couple filing a joint return.
