Louisiana 2018 Tax Updates

Louisiana didn't have many tax changes for tax year 2017. The most notable changes were the elimination of the education credit and the addition of credit recoveries.

The education credit was an $18 credit that taxpayers could claim for each dependent in kindergarten through 12th grade who attended a Louisiana school during the tax year. The credit has been eliminated for 2017 and future years.

Back in 2015 Louisiana reduced many tax credits that could be claimed on a 2014 tax return. These credits include the credit for taxes paid to other states, the Citizens Insurance Credit, and the Education Credit, but now some people will be able to recover on their 2017 Louisiana tax returns part of the amount by which their tax credits were reduced. To be eligible to recover any credits that were reduced, you would have had to request an extension for your 2014 Louisiana tax return prior to May 15, 2015, and file your return after July 1, 2015, but before the extension deadline.
