Illinois 2018 Tax Updates

The Illinois Department of Revenue made several changes for the 2017 tax year. Beginning in July 2017, Illinois raised their individual income tax rate from 3.75% to 4.95%, with the flat rate for 2017 now set at 4.3549%, an average of the two rates to be applied to 2017 income. Illinois also disallowed all exemptions, as well as the Illinois Property Tax Credit and the K-12 Education Expense Credit, for taxpayers with AGI over $250,000 ($500,000 if Married Filing Joint).

In addition, several Illinois credits have increased. The Illinois Education Expense Credit maximum has increased from $500 to $750, and the Illinois Earned Income Credit has increased from 10% to 14% of the federal Earned Income Credit. There are also two new charitable funds available: the Thriving Youth Fund and the Criminal Justice Information Projects Fund.
