Hawaii Tax Details

Update: The filing and payment deadline remains as April 20, 2021. Unemployment compensation is currently still taxable, but that may change based on pending state legislation.

The Hawaii Department of Taxation updated the Schedule CR and clarified the adoption of certain federal measures for tax year 2020.

The Schedule CR was updated to allow reporting of credit carryover for nonrefundable credits. The Historic Preservation Income Tax Credit was also added.

Hawaii will allow up to $300 of cash donations as a deduction for full-year residents who claimed the standard deduction on their federal return. Part-year residents can claim donations made during their period of residency if they take the Hawaii standard deduction.

Hawaii adopted the federal reduction of the medical expense floor to 7.5% for itemized deductions. Hawaii also adopted the federal increase in cash contribution limits to 100% for most donations. They did not, however, adopt the net operating loss provisions in the CARES Act.
