Questions & Answers

Do I owe use tax?

If you purchased something and didn't pay sales tax on it, or you paid less than 7% sales tax, you owe Rhode Island use tax. Usually this happens if you buy something subject to sales tax in Rhode Island from an out-of-state seller who didn't collect sales tax, and then you use your purchase in Rhode Island. Clothing and footwear that cost $250 or less are NOT taxable by Rhode Island, so you don't need to pay any use tax for those kinds of purchases under the limit.
