Questions & Answers

What are state retirement pickup contributions?

Pickup contributions are contributions made to a state retirement or pension system by your employer before any federal taxes are taken out. They reduce the amount of overall compensation reported in Box 1 of your Form W-2.

If your employer participated in this program, the contributions should be stated separately on your Form W-2. The amount entered as an addition should match any amounts entered in Box 14 that are labeled as "STPICKUP". If you're unsure whether the amounts listed in Box 14 of your W-2 are for the state retirement pickup contributions, you should contact your employer.

This portion of your wages is nontaxable for federal purposes until distributed to the employee but is taxable to the state of Maryland immediately. For more information, see Administrative Release 21 .
