Questions & Answers

Who qualifies for District of Columbia teacher subtractions?

An individual must meet the following qualifications to be able to claim this subtraction:

  • The individual must be approved by the DC public schools
  • The individual must be a classroom teacher in a DC public school or public charter school for this entire tax year (2018) or the entire prior tax year (2017)
If a DC classroom teacher claims a deduction on the federal return for personal expenses incurred in purchasing classroom supplies and/or for tuition and fees expenses, then these same expenses cannot be claimed again on the DC return.

For example, a DC teacher who claims $1,500 or more for tuition and fees on the federal return (Form 1040, Line 34) may not take any deduction for these same expenses on the DC return.
