Questions & Answers

What are qualified adoption expenses?

An Oklahoma resident may deduct nonrecurring adoption expenses of up to $20,000 per year. Expenses must be deducted in the year incurred. Qualifying expenses include adoption fees, court costs, medical expenses, attorney fees, and expenses which are directly related to the legal process of adoption of a child.

You should have a schedule describing the expenses claimed. If you are mailing your return, include the schedule with your tax return. If you are e-filing, keep the schedule in your records for three years in case the Oklahoma Tax Commission requests it.
