Questions & Answers

What if I recently sold my property?

You may figure a credit for Illinois property sold in 2018 by combining the 2017 property tax paid in 2018, as well as a portion of the 2018 tax paid based on the time you owned and lived at the property during 2018. You may not take a credit on your 2018 return for a property sold during 2017.

For example, if you sold your house on June 1, 2018, you may claim a credit for any 2017 property taxes you paid during 2018 for that house and any 2018 property taxes you paid for the time you lived in the house until June 1st.
