Questions & Answers

What if I recently sold my property?

You may figure a credit for Illinois property sold in 2020 by combining the 2019 property tax paid in 2020, as well as a portion of the 2020 tax paid based on the time you owned and lived at the property during 2020. You may not take a credit on your 2020 return for a property sold during 2019.

For example, if you sold your house on June 1, 2020, you may claim a credit for any 2019 property taxes you paid during 2020 for that house and any 2020 property taxes you paid for the time you lived in the house until June 1st.
