What are gambling and lottery winnings?

Gambling and lottery winnings include of the following:
  • Cash
  • The value of property (automobiles, jewelry, electronic devices, appliances, clothes, etc.)
  • The value of the use of property (trips, vacations, airline tickets, cruises, etc.)
  • Other items of value
Noncash prizes received from the Pennsylvania Lottery are not considered gambling or lottery winnings, and are not taxed by Pennsylvania.

Full or Part-year Residents
While living in Pennsylvania, all gambling and lottery winnings from any source are taxable on your Pennsylvania return, including winnings from gambling or lottery activity that takes place in another state or country.

Nonresidents
While living outside of Pennsylvania, only winnings from Pennsylvania sources are taxable on your Pennsylvania return. Winnings from gambling or lottery activity taking place in other states or countries should not be included as Pennsylvania income.
