Questions & Answers

Do I need Form 1098-T from my child's college before I can claim the American Opportunity Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit, or Education Deduction?

For most taxpayers, you need to receive Form 1098-T in order to claim the American Opportunity Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit, or the Education Deduction.

For tax year 2018, however, your college may not be required to send you a Form 1098-T under existing rules. Also, sometimes a school might not provide a Form 1098-T even if they are required to do so. In either case, you can claim one of these credits without a Form 1098-T.

If you know the amount of tuition paid to the college you can enter that amount on the Additional Tuition Expenses screen.
