Am I eligible for the Ohio Adoption Credit?

You can claim a credit if you legally adopted in 2021 a child who was under age 18 and who is not your stepchild. The credit is the greater of the following per child:
  • $1,500, or
  • Your adoption-related expenses, up to $10,000.
Expenses can include the following:
  • Medical care for the birth mother and adopted child related to pregnancy and birth
  • Legal fees, guardian ad litem fees, court expenses related to the adoption
  • Adoption agency fees
  • Certain living expenses incurred by the birth mother during pregnancy, up to $3,000.
This is a one-time credit per adoption. Any unused amounts (that you can't use because you don't have any more tax to apply them against) can be carried forward for up to five years.
