Questions & Answers

What amount of educator loan assistance can I subtract from my Montana income?

If you are an educator who received loan assistance through the Quality Educator Loan Assistance Program, you can subtract up to $5,000 for the amount of loan repayment assistance you received that was included in your federal adjusted gross income.

The Quality Educator Loan Assistance Program provides paid loan assistance to educators who worked in a subject identified as a "critical quality educator shortage area" and teach or work at an "impacted school." For information on the program, contact the Montana Office of Public Instruction at (406) 444-3693 or go to their website .

Note: The amount of employer-paid student loan payments that have been excluded from your gross income are not eligible deductions. Only amounts in excess of the federal exclusion are eligible.
