Questions & Answers

Is my retirement income taxable in Mississippi?

Most retirement income, pensions, and annuities aren't taxable in Mississippi if you've met the retirement plan requirements. However, early and excess retirement distributions (see federal Form 5329) aren't considered exempt retirement income and may be subject to Mississippi tax, even if the distributions were taken due to a disaster. If you take a disaster distribution and elect to spread the taxable amount over three years on your federal return, you may do that same on your Mississippi return.
