2-Step Verification

Email Verification (and Phone Verification if you enter a phone number in your account) is on by default for your security.

For an extra layer of security, you can enable Authenticator App or Emergency Code 2-step verification.

STEP 1: Sign in to your account and go to the Account Menu.
STEP 2: Choose to edit 2-Step Verification.
STEP 3: Enter your password.
STEP 4: Choose which method of 2-step verification you'd like to add or edit.

What is the phone number used for?

The phone number is only used to help you access your account if you forget your password or if you're signing in from a device we don't recognize as one you've used before. You can choose whether you'd like a verification code to be texted to your phone number or sent via a phone call.

We'll never use your phone number for marketing purposes, and we'll never sell any of your information to third parties.

If you don't have a phone number, leave this blank.

How does Authenticator App Verification work?

If you want to add an extra layer of security to your account, choose to enable Authenticator App Verification. This is the most secure type of 2-Step Verification we offer for FREETAXUSA.com.

If you choose to use this 2-Step Verification method, you'll need to download an authentication app on your phone or other mobile device (i.e. tablets) (we recommend Google Authenticator). You'll then be shown a QR code to scan with the app which is linked to a "secret key." This "secret key" will generate 6-digit codes which you'll use to sign in to your account.

Every time you sign in to your account from a device we don't recognize, you'll need to enter the 6-digit code generated by the app.

If you ever choose to turn off Authenticator App Verification, you'll need to use Email Verification or Phone Verification to sign in, unless you're signing in from a recognized device.

How do I download Google Authenticator?

Install Google Authenticator for Android
Install Google Authenticator for iPhone or iPad

Alternatively, you can search in your phone or tablet's app store for "Google Authenticator" (or for another authenticator app).

How do I get the authenticator app verification code?

To get the verification code, open your authenticator app on your phone or tablet. This is the app you used to set up Authenticator App Verification. In the app you should see a section that shows your FREETAXUSA account username as well as a 6-digit number. Enter that 6-digit number on this screen.

Verification codes generally expire after a short amount of time so be sure you're using the most recent 6-digit code. Your authenticator app should show you a new code right when the old one expires.

Which type of 2-Step Verification is the most secure?

Authenticator App Verification is the most secure type of 2-Step Verification that we offer.

Listed below are all the 2-Step Verification options we offer.

How do emergency codes work?

We'll give you a list of randomly-generated emergency codes that you should print out and keep in a safe place.

Use the emergency codes to sign in to your account when you are unable to use another form of 2-Step Verification. Once an emergency code is used, it can't be used again. So, be sure to keep track of which codes you have used already.

Each time you sign in from a device we don't recognize, you'll need to enter a verification code sent to your email or phone. If you enable Emergency Code Verification, you'll have the option to enter one of your emergency codes instead of the other verification code.

Note: You can generate more emergency codes from your account if you run out of them. Once you generate a new list of codes, any unused codes from your old list can't be used anymore. We recommend emergency codes only be used as a backup sign in option to a different form of 2-Step Verification, such as Authenticator App Verification.

How does Email Verification work?

Email Verification is enabled by default for your account.

This means we'll send a secure code to your email every time you sign in from a device we don't recognize.

In order to sign in to your account you'll need your username, password, and the verification code we send you, unless you choose to remember your device.

Note: The most secure type of 2-Step Verification we offer is Authenticator App Verification. If you'd like to use a more secure 2-Step Verification method, we recommend you use that option.

How does Phone Verification work?

Phone Verification is enabled by default when you have a phone number on your account. With this enabled we'll send a secure code to your phone every time you sign in. You'll be able to choose if you want the code sent via text or a phone call.

You'll then sign in to your account using your username, password, and the verification code we send you. To bypass having to enter a verification code every time you sign in, you can choose to have us remember your device.

Note: The most secure type of 2-Step Verification we offer is Authenticator App Verification. If you'd like to use a more secure 2-Step Verification method, we recommend you use that option.
