Your amount owed is calculated like this:
Original refund (or amount owed)
- Refund you already got (or tax due you paid)
+/- Adjustments you made to your total tax
New amount you owe from the amendment
This new amount you owe is
in addition to amounts you received or paid with your original return.
Be sure to enter what you received or paid already on the
Personal > Amendment Information screen(s), so your amended amount owed is calculated correctly.
Example: You filed your original return and owed $1,000. Then you realized you forgot to include interest income on your original return, so you amend. You should enter the $1,000 tax paid with the original return on the
Amendment Information screen and then add the interest income you forgot. Based on the amendment calculation, you owe an additional $10 in addition to the $1,000 already paid, so you'll need to pay $10 when you file your amendment.
Why didn't my amendment change my refund (or tax due) like I expected it to?
