Your refund is calculated like this:
Original refund (or amount owed)
- Refund you already got (or tax due you paid)
+/- Adjustments you made to your total tax
New refund from the amendment
This new refund is
in addition to any amounts you received or paid with your original return.
Be sure to enter what you received or paid already on the
Personal > Amendment Information screen(s), so your amended refund is calculated correctly.
Example: You filed your original return and got a refund of $1,000. You realized you forgot to add a dependent on your original return, so you amend. You should enter the $1,000 refund from your original return on the
Amendment Information screen and then add the dependent you forgot. Based on the amendment calculation, you're eligible to receive $200 in addition to the $1,000 you already received, so you'll receive that $200 when you file your amendment.
Why didn't my amendment change my refund (or tax due) like I expected it to?
