What's my share of tax if I filed a 2024 joint return and a separate return in 2025?
If you plan to file a separate return for 2025, but you filed a joint return for 2024, your 2024 tax is your share of the tax on the joint return. A separate return is considered one where you file as Single, Head of Household, or Married Filing Separately.
One way to figure your share of the tax on a joint return is to figure the tax both you and your spouse would have paid had you filed separate returns for 2024 using the same filing status for 2025. Then multiply the tax on the joint return by the following fraction:
Take the tax you would have paid had you filed a separate return, divided by the total tax you and your spouse would have paid had you filed separate returns.
You would use this same fraction to figure your share of credits.
For example: Assume that your tax in 2024 was $8,000 when you filed jointly. Once you recalculate the taxes as if you had filed separately, you find that your tax would have been $4,000 and your spouse's tax would have been $6,000. To calculate your portion of the original $8,000, you divide $4,000 by ($6,000 + $4,000). This gives you the fraction 2/5. You then multiply the original tax by 2/5 (0.4) for a total of $3,200.
