What is an amendment?

An amendment is a corrected tax return. You will need to file an amendment if you submitted a return with incorrect information. For example, if you claimed a dependent when you shouldn't have, you'll need to fix that. However, if you haven't submitted or mailed your return, you can correct your return without filing an amendment. We'll help you know whether or not you need to file an amendment based on the answers you provide to our questions.

If you decide to amend your return, you'll need to make the necessary changes to your return and follow the instructions we provide to know how to submit your return. Remember that if you amend your federal return, you may need to update your state return(s) as well.
