Can my refund be withheld by the IRS?

By law, State and Federal agencies send the IRS the names of taxpayers who are behind on child support payments, taxes, and loans. If you're delinquent on child support payments or have a past due Federal debt (like a student loan), your tax refund might not be refunded to you.

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send you a notice if there's an offset to your refund. The notice will show the original refund amount, the offset amount, the agency receiving the payment, and the agency's address and phone number. If you think you don't owe this debt or if you're disputing the amount taken from your refund, you should contact the agency listed on the notice. If you don't get a notice, call the Bureau of the Fiscal Service at 1-800-304-3107.
