What if my 1099-MISC reports royalty income in Box 1 (Rents)?

If you had royalty income, you should have received Form 1099-MISC with income reported in Box 2 - Royalties. If your royalty income is reported in Box 1 - Rents instead of Box 2 , contact the payer and ask for a corrected 1099-MISC.

If the payer won't give you a corrected 1099-MISC in a timely manner, you can enter the royalty income in Box 2 even though it doesn't match your form. However, if you decide to do this, you'll need to mail your return. You can choose to mail your return later on the Federal Filing Method screen.
