The beneficiary is the person who the account is designated to benefit. The beneficiary either receives the distribution directly to pay for educational expenses or has the funds directly paid to the educational institution on behalf of the beneficiary. The beneficiary and the recipient of the 1099-Q are often the same person unless indicated in Box 6 of your 1099-Q.
