My extension was rejected because the Prior Year AGI or PIN doesn't match the IRS records. What do I do?

Why did I get this rejection?
The IRS makes you enter your prior year adjusted gross income (AGI) or the e-file PIN you selected last year to verify your identity when you e-file a return. If your extension was rejected for an AGI or PIN mismatch, it means that what you entered doesn't match the IRS's records.

The IRS only requires the prior year AGI or the PIN to match their records to get accepted. Most people use their prior year AGI.

How do I fix this?
You'll need to enter a correct prior year AGI or PIN and resubmit your return. Keep clicking Save and Continue until you see the option to enter your prior year AGI. If you'd like to enter your e-file PIN instead, just answer that you don't have access to your prior year return, and you'll see the option to do this.

If you can't enter a correct AGI or PIN, you can mail your return here: Menu Path: Account > File an Extension > Final Steps > Extension Filing Method
