Do I need to include social security disability income on my return?

Menu Path: Income > Common Income > Social Security Benefits (SSA-1099)

Almost all forms of social security income need to be included on a tax return. If the social security income is reportable, a Form SSA-1099 should be issued by the Social Security Administration.

There are 4 main types of social security income:

  1. Social Security Retirement Income - Enter the recipient income on the Social Security Benefits (Form SSA-1099) screen.
  2. Social Security Survivor Benefits - Enter the recipient income on the Social Security Benefits (Form SSA-1099) screen if the recipient needs to file a return. Survivor benefits for children are reportable on the child's return, not the parent's return.
  3. Social Security Disability Income - Enter the recipient income on the Social Security Benefits (Form SSA-1099) screen.
  4. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) - Do not enter on your tax return.
