If the IRS reduced or disallowed a credit you claimed on a prior year return, you should have received an IRS notice explaining the change to the credit.
For certain credits, you'll need to include
Form 8862, Information to Claim Certain Credits After Disallowance with your return to claim them again. These credits include:
- Earned Income Credit
- Child Tax Credit
- Additional Child Tax Credit
- Credit for Other Dependents
- American Opportunity Credit
The notice you received from the IRS should let you know if you need to file
Form 8862 to claim the credit the next time you're eligible to claim it.
