Why does DC need to know about my health insurance coverage?

The District of Columbia law requires all DC residents to have health coverage or a health coverage exemption. If you are a DC resident and don't have health coverage or an exemption, you may have to pay a tax penalty. DC enacted the law in response to the reduction of the federal individual responsibility payment and modeled it after the federal requirement.
