When can I exclude moving expenses from my NJ wages and what expenses can I exclude?

You can exclude reimbursements for moving expenses if you meet the following conditions:

  1. You moved because of a new job and your new job was at least 50 miles farther than the distance from your old home to your old job.
  2. After moving to your new job, you generally must work for at least 39 weeks during the next 12 months after moving.

If you meet the conditions above and your reimbursements were included on your Form W-2(s), you can exclude your reimbursements for the following expenses:

  1. The cost of moving your household goods and personal items from the old home to the new home.
  2. The actual expenses you had for traveling, meals, and lodging when moving yourself and your family from your old home to your new home.
