Can I waive any of the tax for failing to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD)?

The IRS can waive part or all of the additional tax for not taking all of your RMDs if it's due to a reasonable cause and you've taken steps to fix the error. We'll ask you if you qualify and help you claim this waiver.

Some examples of reasonable causes you can include might be:
  • You weren't aware of the retirement account, and it was too late to take the RMD when you found out about it.
  • Your address changed, and your retirement plan administrator couldn't contact you until it was too late to take the RMD.
The IRS will review the information you provide and decide whether to grant your request for a waiver.
