What if I make excess repayments?

Excess repayments are repayments of disaster distributions that are greater than the amount that would be taxable for 2025. If you have an excess repayment, you can carry the excess forward to your 2026 return or back to your 2024 return.

For example, if you had a distribution in 2023 that you elected to spread over three years (2023, 2024, 2025) any excess repayments for this distribution would first be applied to your 2024 return (reported on Form 8915-F) provided you reported the excess on your 2025 return (on Form 8915-F) and you qualify to amend your 2024 return.
