What happens if I enter the wrong routing number or account number?

If the routing number or account number is incorrect, the IRS will send you Notice CP53E requesting your direct deposit information. If you fail to respond to the notice within 30 days from the date on the notice, the IRS will hold your refund for 6 weeks and then mail you a paper check instead of direct depositing your refund.
