What if my name has changed because of marriage, divorce, etc.?

The IRS checks the name and Social Security number on your tax return against the details on file at the Social Security Administration. If the last name on your return doesn't match your Social Security records, the IRS will likely reject your e-filed tax return.

To find out which name is on your Social Security records and how to update it, visit the Social Security Administration website  or call 1-800-772-1213. If your previous last name is what's recorded, you might want to use that name on your tax return.

If you change your last name with the Social Security Administration, make sure to wait two weeks before e-filing your tax return. This allows the IRS time to update your records. If you can't wait two weeks before your return's due date, consider filing an extension or a paper return instead.
