How do I prepare a summary statement for stock or cryptocurrency sales?

If you have entered a summary of several stock or cryptocurrency sales and those sales didn't have the basis reported to the IRS, had adjustments, had a wash sale, or had the Ordinary box checked on Form 1099-B, Box 2 or Form 1099-DA, Box 6, you'll need to prepare a summary statement of each individual transaction to mail to the IRS.

The summary statement of stock or cryptocurrency sales should include the same basic information as Form 8949 for each sale, including:
  • Description
  • Date acquired
  • Date sold
  • Sales price
  • Cost basis
  • Adjustment code(s) (not common)
  • Adjustment amount (not common)
  • Gain or loss
You do not need to include any sales where the basis was reported to the IRS.

If you can produce a PDF or image copy of your summary statement, you can attach it to your e-filed return. Otherwise, you'll need to print out your summary statement and mail it to the IRS.
