What happens when I gift an asset to someone or a charitable organization?

When you gift an asset to someone, you don't need to recognize that as a sale. However, you may have to recapture your Section 179 deduction or recapture excess depreciation (we'll walk you through that process if needed).

If you gift the asset as a charitable contribution, there are rules for how much you can deduct. See IRS Publication 526 .
